Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" Ignites Viral World Wide Internet Meme!

Two decades after it became a mantra of late-'80s pop - and rode the charts in over a dozen countries around the world, hitting # 1 in more than half of them - "Never Gonna Give You Up" by British hitmaker Rick Astley took on a YouTube life of its own in 2008, when the classic video sparked the 'Rickrolling' phenom as a viral Internet meme. To date, according to SurveyUSA, as many as 18 million Americans have been 'Rickrolled,' with more than 30 million views registered at YouTube alone.

"Never Gonna Give You Up" now becomes the opening track on a brand new collection, PLAYLIST: THE VERY BEST OF RICK ASTLEY, the latest entry in the Playlist Series launched earlier this year. With a new liner notes essay by DJ Mike Cimicata, THE VERY BEST OF RICK ASTLEY arrives in stores July 8th on RCA/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

Recalling the origins of "Never Gonna Give You Up" in 1987, Cimicata notes how unlikely it was "that the track's powerful vocals could have emanated from the lungs of a young, clean-cut English recording studio assistant named Rick Astley." Jumping ahead to 2008, when "more than 18 million internet users clicked on an innocent-seeming YouTube link they received via emails, instant messages, and blog posts from friends and colleagues, most had no idea they had fallen victim to the playful internet hoax that created a new fervor surrounding that same song."

"You've been Rickrolled!" was a punch-line that Internet users around the world actually began seeing in 2007, when - instead of being connected to the Web link they had clicked on - they were connected to the video clip posted on YouTube for "Never Gonna Give You Up." American audiences picked up on it as far back as June 2007, when Carson Daly 'Rickrolled' his audience one night with the video.

The prank became viral as users learned how to pass it along. As reported in The Guardian (London), the Church of Scientology was 'Rickrolled' in February 2008, in conjunction with street protests against the Church in London, New York, Washing�ton DC, and Seattle, which proceeded after the co-opting of the Church's website. At the protests, thousands chanted along with the song's chorus, played on boomboxes.

The 'Rickrolling' protests continued at several college basketball games the next month, before the games and during breaks, with the footage also making its way to YouTube, as reported by the New York Times. YouTube was ultimately the focal point of an April Fool's Day 2008 prank, when all videos on the site's home page were linked to 'Rickroll.' Several other websites also participated, but YouTube grabbed the lion's share of attention, registering 6.6 million plays, and 43,000 comments from visitors.

One of the immediate effects was "Never Gonna Give You Up" jumping inside the Top 100 to #77 on the Amazon chart, followed by ringtones and ringbacks quickly made available. Also in April, as the Major League Baseball season got underway, the 'Rickroll' phenom found another outlet: the New York Mets announced that the song had won an Internet poll (with over 5 million votes) to be played as the sing-along during the 7th inning stretch of the opening home game; and at the Pirates opener in Pittsburgh the next day, several fans performed the song on the Jumbotron. Numerous other examples of 'Rickrolling' have been reported throughout the media during '07-08.

Rick Astley's reaction to the 'Rickroll' craze has been good-natured: "I think it's just one of those odd things where something gets picked up and people run with it," he said. "But that's what brilliant about the Internet . it's bizarre and funny."

The album is already a top-seller in the UK and Europe having debuted at # 16 on the UK Album Chart, # 67 in the Netherlands, # 71 in Ireland, and rocketing to #5 in Norway. These feats are all the more remarkable considering that Pacific Ocean Blue was originally released more than 30 years ago and that these are current, not catalog charts.

The release of Pacific Ocean Blue: Legacy Edition has been a cause for celebration among fans and press alike.

"The reissue's heart lies in tracks like 'River Song' and the rollicking 'What's Wrong' --two raw, emotional highlights that are as moody as anything Brian ever composed," wrote Rolling Stone in its four-star review of the album, while MOJO observed that "(Dennis) left behind Pacific Ocean Blue as his masterpiece, a soul-baring document of a disintegrating male psyche that is perfectly poised between pain and its transcendence."

The evolution that began in 1976, of the classic Motown teen hitmaking group the Jackson 5 into the independent grown-ups known forever after on Epic Records as the Jacksons - was a transition that did not happen overnight. But there is universal agreement that by the time they released their third album for their new label, 1978's Destiny (with the worldwide hits "Blame It On The Boogie" and "Shake Your Body"), followed by 1980's Triumph, the first RIAA platinum album of their career - both LPs self-produced for the first time, and (mainly) self-penned - the transition was complete.

"Three decades after its initial release," writes Ernest Hardy of Destiny, "it's still fresher - more potent, more substantive within its sturdy R&B/pop structure - than most of what you hear playing on the radio or streaming on the net today." In honor of its 30th anniversary, DESTINY, including two bonus tracks of rare 12-inch disco mixes previously unavailable on CD, and TRIUMPH, with three bonus tracks of rare 12-inch mixes also previously unavailable on CD, will both arrive in stores August 12th on Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

The ongoing 30th anniversary salute to The Clash etches a new peak with the long-awaited DVD release of Joe Strummer: "The Future Is Unwritten," a film by Julien Temple, which will arrive in stores July 8th on Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony-BMG Music Entertainment.

The intimate biographical portrait of Clash frontman, vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primal lyricist Joe Strummer underscores his passion for the music, and his instincts as a committed social and political activist. His body of work, alongside his partners in The Clash, led the band to be inscribed in rock history as "the only band that mattered" then -- and the only band that really matters now.

"The Future Is Unwritten" is the culmination of a mission that began 30 years ago for award-winning director Temple, who began to film The Clash 30 years ago at the dawn of the punk rock movement in England. Temple set the project aside to work on the Sex Pistols, resulting in The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle (1980), one of the definitive accounts of the era. Patti LaBelle: Busier Than Ever

(CBS)�Singer Patti LaBelle is out with not one, but two albums this week: "Live In Washington, D.C.," a previously unreleased recording of a 1982 concert, and "The Essential Patti LaBelle."

Why release a concert album from 26 years ago?

"Why not?" the double Grammy winner tells Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen. "Why not that one and the essentials at the same time? The essentials have 30 songs that were recorded, three that were never released, the live is totally live. We did two shows that night. The doctor told me not to sing and I sang anyway. Got in trouble with the doctor but got my album done."

According to LaBelle, producer Kenny Gamble brought the recording to her a year ago and suggested they release it. Gamble, along with producing and songwriting partner Leon Huff, created the legendary Philadelphia sound that came to prominence in the 1970s. LaBelle and Gamble grew up on the same street in Philly and have worked together for more than 30 years.

At 64, LaBelle is busier than ever.

Besides constant touring and performing, she has a wig line called Patti LaBelle Hair and a new cooking DVD coming out in a month. She also has her own line of Patti LaBelle - Good Life hot sauce and relishes.

"One of them is called Hot Flash," she said. "It is menopausal. A hot flash one, a mild one, some relish and stuff. It's in all major supermarkets."

This month she's back in the studio recording a reunion album with her original trio, LaBelle, with whom she had the 1975 No. 1 hit "Lady Marmalade." Rocker Lenny Kravitz and Gamble are producing the album. The following month she starts on a solo album.

With all her hard work, she still finds time for her philanthropic work. A diabetic whose mother died of the disease at age 58, LaBelle serves as a spokeswoman for the National Medical Association, which administers a scholarship in her name, the National Minority AIDS Council's "Live Long, Sugar" campaign and the American Diabetes Association.

She also serves on the boards of the National Alzheimer Association and the National Cancer Institute.

Turning back the clock nearly three decades to a previously unreleased concert by Patti Labelle in 1982, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is now a center�piece of LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C., which takes its rightful place in Patti's discography as her earliest live recording, after she began her solo career five years before.� This newly discovered treasure will arrive in stores June 10^th on Philadelphia International/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAIN�MENT.�

Following the Overture, the concert takes off.� In the words of liner notes writer David Nathan (aka The British Ambassador of Soul), "From the first sirenlike swoop of 'The Spirit's In It,' Patti wrapped her everlasting arms around the crowd, to its delirious delight."� The song, a Kenny Gamble and Cecil Womack composition, was the title tune opening track of The Spirit's In It, Patti's first album for Philadelphia International in 1981.� That album - and this LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. concert - close with the song that won diva status for Patti starting in the '80s, her show-stopping version of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg's standard, "Over The Rainbow."

Patti's concert program was, indeed, a tour de force from beginning to end.� In 1982, many fans were still familiar with 1979's It's Alright With Me, her third solo album on Epic Records, produced by Skip Scarborough.� Three songs on LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. come from that LP, including "Come What May," by '70s/'80s hitmaker David Lasley.� Also from It's Alright With Me, "Music Is My Way of Life" and the album title tune, "It's Alright With Me," are worked into a medley with "What Can I Do For You."�� The latter was one of several songs that Patti held over from her time with supergroup LaBelle, from their 1974 album, Nightbirds.� No Patti Labelle concert would be complete without another pair of LaBelle favorites, 1975's career-defining worldwide hit "Lady Marmalade," and 1976's "Isn't It A Shame" (written by Hollywood composer Randy Edelman, and covered that same year by Shirley Bassey).

Patti Labelle was her self-titled debut solo album on Epic Records in 1977, and it is the source of two songs on LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C., "Joy To Have Your Love" and "You Are My Friend."� Both songs were co-written by keyboardist James (Budd) Ellison, who became Patti's musical director.� Ellison was also the co-writer of "What Can I Do For You," with guitarist and backup singer Edward Batts, one of the eight top-notch musicians heard on this brilliant concert set.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now," Nathan writes, "was particularly poignant, a dynamic demonstration of the subtleties that make Patti such an exceptional gospel-rooted singer."� Interestingly, she did not get around to recording the song until 1985, on her third and final PIR album, simply titled Patti.

LIVE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. comes to an emotional climax with "Over The Rainbow," (in Nathan's words) "bringing the congregation to its feet and proving why Patti remains our beloved Mother Earth."

The intimatebiographical portrait of Clash frontman, vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primallyricist Joe Strummer (b. Aug. 21, 1952- d. His body of work, alongside his partners in the Clash, led theband to be inscribed in rock history as "the only band that mattered" then - and the only band that reallymatters now.

Filmmaker Temple's 30-year association with JohnGraham Mellor aka Joe Strummerresounds throughout the course of the film, as the Clash City Rocker's life andtimes and influences unfold. THEFUTURE IS UNWRITTEN - with narration throughout by Strummerfrom his BBC radio show - is a major musical event in its own right, featuringsome65 songs heard in full or in part. With all the recent, ironic fanfare around yacht/soft/cheese rock from the halcyon days of Sunny California now coming to a crest, again, the timing of the re-release of former Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue couldn't be better. This album employs many of the elements of the aforementioned '70s and '80s era, but crushes up the irony and snorts it. Pacific Ocean Blue hurts. Each song on the record is a rollercoaster of emotions that paints a stark picture of the cocaine boogie meets shattering crash of Dennis' life on the skids. This is one of the quintessential L.A. albums, for its fireworks of fame and celebrity are stripped naked and left to wander. This record screams with the vulnerability of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, while also never straying from the melody that seemed to be as comforting for Wilson as it is for the listener. Discovering the original record is well worth the purchase, but hearing the second disc of tunes from the unreleased Bambu record makes this Legacy Edition a must-have. Not scratchy demos in the slightest, the Bambu recordings range from White Album booze-rockers to extended-groove spaceman instrumentation.

Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue

Eternal Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's much sought-after 1977 solo album - which Mojo Magazine has heralded as a "buried treasure" -- will return to circulation on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary of Wilson's untimely death in 1983, at age 39.� The double-CD PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE - LEGACY EDITION will arrive in stores June 17th on Caribou/Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.� A vinyl edition of the LP will also be released at the same time, on the Sundazed label.

In 1977, Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue became the first solo LP to be released by a member of the legendary Beach Boys.� Dennis, the band's surfer, drummer and free spirit, emerged from the shadow of his older brother, pop genius Brian Wilson, and shocked the industry with a sound and style unlike any other.� Over thirty years later Pacific Ocean Blue remains arguably the greatest solo work by a Wilson.

"In all those years since Pacific Ocean Blue became a rare gem, I have been eager to make it more widely available," says James William Guercio,� producer and owner of Caribou Records, who served then and now as executive producer.� "The music that caught the ear of critics and fans in 1977 has fallen from popular conscious�ness in the last two decades, and it has long been due this incredible treatment.� The devotion that the Legacy Recordings crew has shown to both the official album and the huge number of unreleased tracks is a testa�ment to the strength of Dennis' musical genius."

Dozens of musicians and singers collaborated on the Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu sessions, which took place at numerous studios around Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami.� In addition to Dennis Wilson on vocals, drums, percussion, keyboards, and harmonica, there were his wife Karen Lamm-Wilson; Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys on guitar and vocal backgrounds; latter day Beach Boys members Billy Hinsche and Bruce Johnston (vocal backgrounds) and Ricky Fataar (drums); Beach Boys engineer Earle Mankey (guitar); and many West Coast session greats.� A host of background vocalists included Christine McVie of Fleeetwood Mac, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean, and more.

Bob Dylan Wins Pulitzer Prize

Bob Dylan is the recipient of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Special Citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." The Nashville Underground movement united an influential portion of country music's alienated minority of singers, songwriters, and producers in the early 1970s - and didn't let go. By 1975, when Willie Nelson - relocated outside Austin, Texas for five years by then - released his groundbreaking debut album on Columbia Records, Red Headed Stranger, the movement was no longer underground and had a bold new name: Outlaw Country.

Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" Becomes America's #1 Digital Song

This week, Jeff's 1994 recording "Hallelujah" hit the #1 spot on iTunes' singles chart thanks to America's top-rated network television show, American Idol. It's the first U.S. Number One song on any chart for the revered singer/songwriter, who died May 29, 1997 at age 30.

Jason Castro, a 20-year-old aspiring singer from Rockwall, Texas, performed "Hallelujah" on Tuesday, March 4th before the Idol judges. Although "Hallelujah" has been performed by artists ranging from k.d. lang to Bon Jovi, American Idol judges Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell both stated that Jeff Buckley's version was their personal favorite. Jason Castro's rendition of the song-combined with the judges' favorable comments-propelled droves of viewers to the iTunes Store to download the original version from Grace, which promptly shot to No. 4 on iTunes singles chart and then over the following weekend continued to climb, finally reaching the coveted Number One position. To date, Legacy Recordings has sold over 565,773 digital downloads of Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah."

"It's a thrill to see Jeff's work being embraced in his own country at this level," says Mary Guilbert, the artist's mother and the chief executor of his estate. "Even though it has been more than a decade since his departure, it was very moving to hear the American Idol judges speak so highly of Jeff. A mother can't help but love that!"
